THE CHALLENGE:

I was tasked with capturing the high-stakes energy of a semi-final football game, with a specific editorial focus on the “Bufals” team and their star player.

 

The conditions were a classic worst-case scenario for sports photography: driving rain, extremely poor illumination, and the need to capture high-speed plays from the sidelines without interfering with the game.

MY APPROACH:

This situation demanded technical precision and patience. To overcome the distance and remain non-intrusive, I used a telephoto lens. The main challenge was the light; a flash was not an option.



Instead of just cranking the ISO and getting noisy images, my strategy was to patiently anticipate the plays, watching and waiting to capitalize on the only moments of dynamic light—those split-seconds when the action moved into a slightly better-lit part of the field or the rain briefly cleared.

THE OUTCOME:

 

A raw, atmospheric gallery that captured the grit and intensity of a semi-final. Despite the severe technical challenges, I delivered powerful, focused shots of the team’s effort and key plays from their star player, proving my ability to get the “money shots” even when the environment is actively working against me.
