This situation demanded technical precision and patience. To overcome the distance and remain non-intrusive, I used a telephoto lens. The main challenge was the light; a flash was not an option.
Instead of just cranking the ISO and getting noisy images, my strategy was to patiently anticipate the plays, watching and waiting to capitalize on the only moments of dynamic light—those split-seconds when the action moved into a slightly better-lit part of the field or the rain briefly cleared.
